The UTSA Roadrunners won just one road game all year, and despite playing as the home team in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl, quarterback Owen McCown knew that playing Coastal Carolina in their home stadium would still be a tall task.
“When we found out we were going to play in this game, it was basically another road game for us,” McCown said. “We have kind of struggled with that this year, so getting one more shot at playing in a road game, we really just wanted to end it for the seniors and that’s what we did.”
McCown, the son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, passed for 254 yards with one passing and one rushing touchdown. He led an offense that totaled 513 yards and averaged eight yards per play.
“He’s pretty much carried this team a lot this year,” UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor said. “We had a lot of guys get injured, and he allowed those guys to grow up.”
McCown joins Ohio’s Rickey Hunt, Marshall’s Rasheen Ali, Tulsa’s Davis Brin, and Appalachian State’s Camerun Peoples to etch their names on the Myrtle Beach Bowl MVP trophy.
